Afton of Margate Castle

An amazing journey
This book is an amazing journey into the life of Afton, a young vilein with many siblings. She is taken into the castle to be a companion to the earl's daughter. After falling in love with the earl's handsome young son, they marry her off to a cruel man. This is a remarkable story about one woman's determination for revenge...and all-consuming love for a brave young knight named Calhoun.

WOW, Good Reading
I see that "Afton of Margate" has been published again. No wonder, it is a fabulous read. This book has started me on reading just about everything she has written. I am now up to about 20 of her books. I love her hint of romance. You are drawn into her characters and into the period of time that she writes about. She writes about strong women. If you want a "never put it down book" this is the one!

Splendid!
One could write for hours on end praising the obviously thorough reasearch Ms. Hunt has put into this novel. the reader is ushered into the plot in a very rare manner -gently, without being "talked down to". Somehow, every term seems clear although one may not have been familiar with it before reading the story. This is a very special quality. Even more time could be passed gushing over how smoothly the plot flows and how real the characters seem. One actually feels a part of the story. But all this seems useless to cite. The novel is of such incomparable matter that one simply has to read it to believe it. Needless to say, I highly recommend this book!

One Tattered Angel: A Touching True Story of the Power of Love

Author: Blaine M. Yorgason

Inspiring and Humbling
This awesomely well-written little book is one of the most inspiring and humbling books I have read in a long time. I have given several as gifts and will give more. My sister's comments were that it "should be required reading for everyone." That pretty well sums it up. Highly recommended.

amazing and thought provoking
i was on the island of st. martin recently, staying at a small hotel on the beach; to pass some time, i'd noticed they had "used" books on the shelf in the lobby to borrow and saw this little book called "one tattered angel". i started reading it and couldn't put it down. it affected the rest of my trip & my outlook on things, especially the power of prayer. i wanted to take the book with me - i was going to ask the hotel if i could buy it, just in case i couldn't find it anywhere. however, i noticed that it was signed by the author! i realized that the book needed to be left right there, so someone else could have the pleasure of reading it, like i did.

One Tattered Angel
This book touched and inspired me so much that we named our daughter Charity after the subject of this book. This book helps us to better understand what our Heavenly Father expects of us, how very much he loves us and how he compensates for the weaknesses we have been given. There are blessings, even in the toughest of trials. Don't hesitate to buy this book. It may (and should) change your life.

Hard to come by, but if you can get a hold of it-do!
If you are at all interested in the Plains Indians, Native American Art, or the history of the Cheyenne, do everything you can to get a hold of this CD, which takes you on a tour of an exhibit at the Denver Historical Society Museum. The center piece is the legder art of the this fiece warrior society, but many other artistic and historical items are also included.

I have read extensively on this subject, and visited any number of museums, yet I still learned a lot from the text and the narration. In addition you can click on any of the items in the virtual tour and get a detailed description along with a history-and there are many, many items. There is also a separate section on the ledger art which is clearly displayed a beautiful.

Kids will love going through the virtual exhibit, though I found clicking the next button, and viewing items one by one more helpful. There is also a special kids section, so the entire family can enjoy it.

This is well worth the price!

I have never seen anything so detailed!
This CD is unlike anything I've ever seen. Especially in history and art subjects. It even translates all 100 or so works of ledger art and speaks it out loud in Cheyenne! By a real person!

Amazing depth yet usable by my children.
The Virtual walk through of the History museum gives you the feeling of having visited the exhibit.

Every single drawing is detailed with indian and soldier accounts of the drawings; subject, date, etc.

Schools should require this kind of history lesson.

Seth Eastman: A Portfolio of North American Indians
Published in Hardcover by Afton Historical Society Press (September, 1995)
Authors: Sarah E. Boehme, Christian F. Feest, Patricia Condon Johnston, Seth Eastman, and Minn.) Afton Historical Society Press (Afton
Average review score:

A superb addition to any Native American collection
Seth Eastman: A Portfolio Of North American Indians showcases fifty-six watercolor paintings by a career army officer who was assigned to frontier duty (including a seven-year stint at Fort Snelling in the 1840s). The artist was also a gifted pictorial historian of the Native Americans who was scrupulous in his accuracy of portraying the whole complex fabric of Native American dress, culture, and daily life. This outstanding compendium of his work ranges from temporary summer encampments to winter villages; courting and marriage customs; the making of maple sugar, protecting cornfields from birds, spearing fish, gathering wild rice; the menstrual lodge, how Dakota women sat, the medicine man; as well as breaking camp and traveling. Enhanced with informative, insightful, descriptive commentaries by Sara E. Boehme, Christian E. Feest, and Patricia Condon Johnston, Seth Eastman: A Portfolio Of North American Indians is a superb addition to any Native American collection and will prove to be of immense interest to students of the 19th Century American art history as well.

The Coffee Table and Beyond
Perhaps more than any other individual, the paintings of Seth Eastman have become associated with the pictorial history of early Minnesota. Extremely detailed and devoid of the romanticism which often clouds later and, too frequently, lesser works, Eastman's paintings and sketches beautifully and accurately capture the landscapes and lifestyles of the Minnesota Frontier.

The written narrative offered by Boehme and Johnston provides both interesting details and a historical context which enhances the paintings. However, the true power of this book remains the illustrations themselves. Anyone interested in Minnesota history, Native American history, or American frontier and landscape artistry will find this book thoroughly enjoyable as an addition to their coffee table. For those with more than a passing interest in these subjects, this collection of Eastman's paintings provides a valuable historical resource beyond the its coffee table appeal.

We come to understand why we make the decisions we make. STAGES offer a unique way of looking and living life. Considering this book was published years ago, Nathaniel Lande is a visionary, far ahead of his time with meaningful scholarship. It a timeless book that should a handbook, a moral manual for historians and politicians, professors and students, and of course by decision makers everywhere.

Understanding Moral Decisions
With graceful scholarship, STAGES indentifies six stages of ethical decision making. It is a way to look at life and history, literature and philosophy, as if through a moral telescope that reveals details of familiar landscapes.

The Captive

Author: Parris Afton Bonds
Average review score:

Unique Highland Story
Enya and Ranald find their hatred for what the other stands for turns to love of the deepest kind. Their story is a delight to read. Enya is spunky and not afraid of this bitter laird. She sees past the facade to emotions he doesn't even realize still lies beneath the layers of embitter rage. Each brings out the better in the other. Enya has never felt attractive and Ranald gradually gives her that feeling despite his intent to destroy all that she stands for, having traded her Scottish birthright for the British that overthrows their rightful heritage. The Scottish lord finds he is taught an important lesson on Love rather than Hate. The ending is the best in the entire romantic genre. No author has topped it nor do I think that the sensational ending ever will be. It created that wonderful warm and fuzzy feeling that stays with you long after the last line is read.

Cheyenne Dog Soldiers: A Ledgerbook History of Coups and Combat
Published in Hardcover by University Press of Colorado (April, 1997)
Authors: Jean Afton, David Fridtjof Halaas, Andrew E. Masich, and Richard N. Ellis
Average review score:

An absolute must have for students of Plains Indian warfare
On September 17, 1868, Eugene Carr's Fifth United States cavalry guided by "Buffalo Bill" Cody, surprised and attacked Tall Bull's village of Cheyenne Dog Soldiers at Summit Springs, Colorado Territory. In one of the hastily abandonded lodges, a ledger book was found which had been initially captured by the Cheyenne during their retalitory raids following the Sand Creek massacre four years earlier. In the book were drawings of events of great valor done by Cheyenne warrior/artists.

The authors have reproduced the pages of the original ledgerbook in their original size and have added very detailed explainations of the drawings.

This book is very well researched and produced. David F. Halaas is the Colorado State Historian and Andrew Masich is a past president of that organization.

The Savage

BETTER THAN AVERAGE ROMANCE! [WRONG BOOK GUYS!]
[This book is THE SAVAGE by Parris Afton Bonds - whoops! what happened?]

Quote - "The Virginia Company of London seeks one hundred willing maids for marriage to bachelor planters of James Cittie Colony. Maids must be young, handsome, and honestly educated."

Well at 26, Modesty wasn't young and if an hourglass figure and fair features were considered handsome she didn't qualify. But education maybe a valid point.

Modesty's talent very soon got her into trouble and she was soon fleeing London on the boat to the New World.

Jack Holloway, her scurvy boss, soon met up with Modesty just before she was declared a witch by Richard Ratcliff, who objected to her acting as a marriage broker for some of the women.

There was humor in reading her insights into some of the bachelors who came to purchase the bride contracts and how she skillfully manuevered certain couples together.

Modesty figured she would be able to buy her own contract so that she would not have to wed. She soon found herself offering marriage to Mad Dog Jones, who had saved her friend Jack Holloway from certain death. Jack now being an indentured servant.

Mad Dog's consummation of the marriage seemed a bit ruthless but then he had no trust of Modesty or of her shenanigens. He kept a constant eye on her and Jack.

He soon came to understand her need to hide her insecurities and soon developed a passion for her in his bed and in his life.

Modesty learned much of Mad Dogs' gentleness and reclusiveness and came to appreciated what he did for others. But all she wanted was someone who would love her.

Great story of how they live through the Indian visits and raids and how Modesty does finally save Mad Dog's life with her fairy magic.

Great story of Colonial times and HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - Wonderful characters and how they blend into each others lives. Surpriseing match-ups and great ending.

Storyline ....
Since Amazon didn't post an editorial review, here's the description from the back of the book to help you decide if this book is for you: "Chatelaine ... to some she seemed a seductress, to some a sorceress, but to the people of Montlimoux she was chatelaine, mistress of moonlit spires and sunlit meadows, of a sleepy contented land that time had left behind. The bewitching Countess Dominique de Bar had devoted her life to making Montlimoux a place of peace and harmony; now all her efforts were threatened by a single stranger disguised in beggar's garb. Paxton of Wynchester was a leader of men, a conqueror who knew more of war than love. He demanded Dominique's surrender, taking first her lush holdings and then her vulnerable virgin's body. But in the sweet ecstasy of their union lay an unexpected twist. which of them had been seduced, and which truly conquered? As he feel deeper under Dominique's silken spell, Paxton realized he had seriously underestimated the power of a woman's love."
